ARCHEOLIGICAL PLANTS
The Collection of archaeological plant materials was formed thanks to the research and study developed by the Association Archeologia Arborea. The Association was formed to further research, protect and spread the knowledge of species and varieties of local fruit -bearing plants. Every year numerous species disappear so the Association has set out to determine those that need saving.
The research was begun around 1970 in the Upper Tiber Valley and takes into account the traditional and popular usage of plants cultivated for local consumption.
The plants are cultivated by traditional systems. There are many reminiscences which tell of 400 varieties of apple, pear, peach, plum, fig, cherry, almond, rowan, medlar, grape and jujube.
The collection is open to the public and may be found at the 'Azienda Agricola of San Lorenzo in Lerchi which is only a few kilometres from Cittą di Castello and is visited regularly by ecological technicians and associations, schools and Universities
